About Waiʻānapanapa

Know the place before you go.

Waiʻānapanapa means “glistening waters”, and Pailoa is the park’s famous black sand beach.

The park also has a native hala forest, a heiau, sea stacks, blowholes, a natural stone arch and a seabird colony.

An ancient coastal trail in the park leads to Hāna.

The Honokalani Road turnoff is 1.8 miles before the Uakea Road turnoff to Hāna Bay when you drive in from Kahului.

Camping and cabins here are by reservation through the state system.

Lunch before the black sand

Non-residents need entry and parking reservations for the park, so it helps to eat first.

A burrito, or a taco plate of two tacos with rice and beans, is an easy lunch before you walk down to the beach.

Then it is Hāna Highway for 2.8 miles and Honokalani Road for 0.5 miles.

Tacos after the coast

Coming back from the sea stacks and the arch, order two mahi-mahi tacos with chipotle sauce, or go shrimp.

Choose corn or flour, and soft or crispy if you go corn.

Lemonade, hibiscus tea and Thai iced tea are all on the drinks list.

Thai plates for a longer day

If the walk left you wanting something bigger, order green curry, pad thai or the crispy pork belly basil stir-fry with rice.

The vegan side has veggie curry, red or green, plus veggie egg rolls and veggie drunken noodles.

I ended up doing one mahi and one shrimp, on corn. Served up with lime and fresh jalapeno slices, they hit the spot before we headed to Waiʻānapanapa.
